Tekeliev's ballet The Shadow dates from 1979 and brought him the Sofia Prize in 1985; the suite drawn from it is listed in the Sofia Philharmonic's register as the first suite from the ballet, which implies a second. The subject — Hans Christian Andersen's tale of a scholar whose shadow detaches itself, prospers, and finally has its owner executed — gave the composer a scenario of doubling and reversal that suited an orchestral idiom already inclined to sharp contrasts. Tekeliev also wrote the opera The Duke's Cook, staged in 1989.
