The words are by Carmelo Errico, Tosti's regular collaborator, and the song was published in the mid-1880s. Its subject is unusual for the salon repertoire of the time: not longing but its aftermath, a man telling a woman plainly that he no longer loves her while the music keeps returning to the warmth of what is being renounced. The contradiction between text and melody is the point, and it is what has kept the song in recital programmes long after most of Tosti's several hundred others fell out of use.
