Conquest of Paradise is the title theme Vangelis wrote for Ridley Scott's 1492: Conquest of Paradise in 1992, built on a ground bass with a choir singing invented syllables that sound Latin without being it. The film failed; the music did not. Three years later the German boxer Henry Maske adopted the piece as his entrance music, after which it reached number one in Germany and stayed on the chart for months. Vangelis, who worked without conventional notation and recorded almost everything himself, had already scored Chariots of Fire and Blade Runner.
