The Legend of the Lake is Vladigerov's ballet, op. 40, from which he drew two concert suites; the second of them is dated 1953. Its subject is a lake legend. Vladigerov orchestrates heavily — divided strings, a large percussion group, piano inside the ensemble — and the dance numbers keep the irregular metres of horo and rachenitsa without quoting existing tunes. The suites are performed more often than the staged work.
