Altenkirchen is a district and administrative centre in the wooded Westerwald region. Its market square, public institutions and cultural venues serve both the town and surrounding communities. The Stadthalle and Haus Felsenkeller host visiting performers, while the weekly market remains part of the town centre's everyday life.
The town also has a documented place in the French Revolutionary Wars. French forces won the battle of Altenkirchen on 4 June 1796. General François Séverin Marceau was mortally wounded near Höchstenbach on 19 September and died in Altenkirchen on 21 September. The municipal historical chronicle identifies the government building, rather than the hospital in the castle, as the place of his death. These events form one part of a local history preserved through the town's historical records and guided walks.
