Arezzo's historic centre brings together Etruscan and Roman remains with medieval and Renaissance architecture. The Roman amphitheatre survives alongside later landmarks such as Piazza Grande, the church of Santa Maria della Pieve and the Medici Fortress. In the Basilica of San Francesco, Piero della Francesca's Legend of the True Cross is a central part of the city's artistic heritage. The Giorgio Vasari House Museum preserves another connection with Renaissance art.
Choral music has an established institutional presence through the Guido d'Arezzo Foundation. Its activities include international and national polyphonic competitions, composition competitions and training for choir directors. The Giostra del Saracino and the antiques fair provide further expressions of local tradition, using the historic city as a setting for recurring public events.
