Piazza della Libertà is a civic square in the upper historic centre of Arezzo, on the hill of San Pietro. The Palazzo dei Priori, which houses the town hall, stands on the square. Built around 1333 for the government of the medieval commune, the palace was supplemented by its prominent tower from 1337. Its continued administrative use gives the square a direct connection with Arezzo’s municipal history, while the palace preserves works by artists including Giorgio Vasari. Arezzo rises in terraces above the Valdichiana plain, and one of the squares of its upper town carries the name Libertà. Piero della Francesca's fresco cycle and Vasari's house stand a few minutes' walk away; the square itself is a working civic space, used for gatherings, markets and, when the weather turns, for performances staged in the open. Verdi's Rigoletto has been given there.
