City
Augsburg preserves a long history of commerce, craftsmanship and cultural exchange. The Fuggerei, the town hall with its Golden Hall, and the fountains and historic buildings of the old town are among its distinctive landmarks. The city's water-management system links engineering with architecture: canals, water towers, fountains and hydroelectric facilities record centuries of work to supply water and generate power. It became a UNESCO World Heritage property in 2019.
Augsburg also has a strong musical and literary identity. Leopold Mozart was born here, and the city commemorates the family's connection through its Mozart festival. Bertolt Brecht's association with Augsburg is reflected in the city's cultural programme, including the Brechtfestival. Museums, theatres and other festivals continue to give public expression to a heritage that extends from Roman settlement to the industrial era.
