Bad Homburg’s palace and spa park preserve different aspects of its history as a courtly resort. The palace was the residence of the Landgraves of Hesse-Homburg until 1866 and subsequently passed into Prussian royal use. Kaiser Wilhelm II used it as a summer residence. Its White Tower remains a prominent feature of the complex, while the English Wing recalls Landgravine Elisabeth.
The Kurpark was shaped in the nineteenth century by Peter Joseph Lenné, working on a commission from François Blanc. Its landscape design surrounds buildings and monuments associated with the spa’s social life: the casino, Kaiser-Wilhelms-Bad, orangery and music pavilion. Two Thai salas add another distinctive element to the grounds. The combination of palace rooms, park architecture and places for music provides a concrete picture of the town’s cultural heritage and of the international connections cultivated by European resorts.
