Bad Säckingen’s association with Joseph Victor von Scheffel’s The Trumpeter of Säckingen is reflected in its museums and monuments. Schönau Palace, a seventeenth-century former moated residence, houses rooms devoted to Scheffel, a trumpet museum and collections of local history and archaeology. A concert shell stands beside the palace grounds.
The old town gathers around the Fridolinsmünster, whose Baroque interior includes a silver shrine made in 1764. The nearby covered wooden bridge crosses the Rhine to Stein in Switzerland. Its present construction dates from 1785 and 1803 and is associated with the master builder Blasius Baldischwiler. These dates distinguish the surviving structure from the much longer history of the crossing. Literary memory, church art and the timber bridge give the town several complementary landmarks, each with a specific place in its cultural history.
