Berlin's Museum Island brings together five museums whose buildings were developed between 1824 and 1930. The ensemble reflects the emergence of the public museum as a place for studying art, archaeology and the history of civilisations. Its architects designed individual buildings in close relationship to the collections they were intended to display.
Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1999, Museum Island also records the changing ambitions of museum architecture across more than a century. The buildings suffered wartime damage and have undergone extensive conservation and reconstruction. Their historical significance lies both in the collections and in their arrangement as a coherent cultural district at the heart of Berlin. The relationship between public space, architecture and the presentation of art remains central to the ensemble's identity.
