Büdingen's historic centre developed under the protection of a castle that became the residence of the Ysenburg counts. Civic prosperity supported the construction of a town hall, St Mary's Church and substantial timber-framed and stone houses. Its later medieval defences include a circuit more than two kilometres long with 22 towers, reflecting the changing demands of fortification after the introduction of firearms. The castle itself originated as a moated stronghold in the late twelfth century and preserves early elements alongside later additions. Together, the residential buildings, civic monuments and defensive works reveal a town shaped by successive periods of growth rather than a single frozen moment.
