In Cedar Falls, university performance and community concert life meet at the Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center. Construction at the University of Northern Iowa began in 1997, following years of planning and cooperation between university and local supporters. Opening celebrations in April 2000 brought together university ensembles and the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony, alongside visiting performers. The inaugural season subsequently included Canadian Brass and the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. The centre thus connects the work of students with the professional touring circuit, giving the university campus a cultural role that extends into Cedar Falls and the surrounding communities.
