Changsha

Changsha, the capital of Hunan, presents part of its cultural heritage through contemporary media. Its designation as a UNESCO Creative City of Media Arts in 2017 recognised a field that includes digital production, public art and the reuse of urban spaces. Projects described by UNESCO connect historical material with new forms of presentation: virtual-reality encounters with the Han period, digital displays of calligraphy and painting, and digitally designed fireworks at Orange Island. This combination gives the city's cultural profile a distinctive range, placing inherited visual traditions alongside the technologies through which new audiences can encounter and reinterpret them.
