Coburg's fortress preserves a particular episode in the history of the Reformation. Martin Luther stayed at the Veste from April to early October 1530 while the Diet of Augsburg was taking place. Unable to attend the proceedings himself, he worked from this protected setting. The rooms associated with his stay and the objects displayed by the art collections give that episode a material presence, alongside portraits from the Cranach circle and the glass traditionally associated with Luther. The chapel visitors see belongs to a later rebuilding of 1910–1913. Coburg's connection with Luther thus includes both sixteenth-century history and the ways later generations chose to commemorate it.
