Concord's Capitol Theatre began on 30 January 1927 as a venue for vaudeville and films. Its later transformation into the Capitol Center for the Arts followed acquisition by a nonprofit organisation and extensive restoration, with the centre opening in 1995. Further work in 2003 supported its developing role as a performance venue. The main auditorium, now known as the John F. Swope Theatre, is complemented by the Bank of New Hampshire Stage, which opened in 2019. Live performances, screened arts events and student matinees give the centre a varied public programme, carrying an early twentieth-century entertainment building into a broader community role.
