The Hague's cultural landscape extends from the medieval Binnenhof beside the Hofvijver to modern performance spaces. The Ridderzaal preserves the setting of a thirteenth-century court, while the nearby Mauritshuis belongs to a later architectural chapter. Music has its own long institutional history in the Residentie Orkest, whose first official concert was conducted by Henri Viotta on 20 November 1904. The programme included Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony and Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto. Since 2021, Amare has provided a shared home for the orchestra, Nederlands Dans Theater and the Royal Conservatoire. The city's musical life thus connects established institutions with a newer setting for performance and education.
