The dance theatre of The Hague, opened in 1987 to a design by Rem Koolhaas as the home of the Nederlands Dans Theater and long paired with the neighbouring Dr Anton Philipszaal. Nederlands Dans Theater left for the new Amare complex on the same site in November 2021; the demolition of the two halls is placed by the sources between 2016 and 2022. The building went up between 1984 and 1987 and opened on 9 September 1987; it was described as the first theatre anywhere planned specifically for dance. The auditorium held 1,001 seats in twenty-three rows, and the complex also contained three studios, offices and a restaurant set in a gold truncated cone, with an oval skybar suspended above the foyer on tension and compression rods. It was built over a car park on a steel frame. Nederlands Dans Theater moved into Amare in November 2021. The Lucent Danstheater in The Hague opened in 1987 as the Danstheater aan het Spui, providing Nederlands Dans Theater with a purpose-built home. Carel Birnie commissioned the project from the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, the practice founded by Rem Koolhaas. Initially conceived beside the Circustheater in Scheveningen, the theatre was redesigned for a larger site on Spui in the city centre.
