Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562-1621), organist in Amsterdam, left around seventy keyboard works. The Concertgebouw opened there on 11 April 1888 to a design by Adolf Leonard van Gendt modelled on the Leipzig Gewandhaus. The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra was founded the same year, received its royal title in 1988 and also plays for Dutch National Opera, which has occupied the Stopera building since 1986. The Holland Festival grew out of a one-off arts festival in 1947; its first edition under the Holland Festival name opened on 15 June 1948.
