The theatre in Hengelo opened on 21 April 2001 with a performance by the Nationale Reisopera. Designed by Jan Hoogstad, the building contains three auditoriums: a main theatre seating more than eight hundred, a flexible flat-floor hall with over three hundred seats and an 88-seat cinema. These spaces occupy a complex of approximately 8,500 square metres. PBTA provided advice on acoustics, building physics and theatre technology. Originally known as the Rabotheater, the institution adopted the name Schouwburg Hengelo in August 2017. The Hengelo theatre opened on 21 April 2001 with a production by the Nationale Reisopera, and opera has stayed in its programme since. Jan Hoogstad designed the building, which holds three rooms: the Rabozaal of 880 seats, a flat-floor middle hall of 300 and an 88-seat cinema. Professional touring work, school and amateur performances and film share the season, and the building is used heavily for congresses, debates and exhibitions. In August 2017 the name was changed to Schouwburg Hengelo.
