Theatre De Kampanje in Den Helder moved to Willemsoord in October 2015. Its home occupies former Royal Netherlands Navy workshops where ships were constructed and maintained. Van Dongen-Koschuch Architects and Planners converted the industrial buildings while retaining their brickwork, timber and steel, introducing glass to connect the historic fabric with new public spaces. The project received an Arie Keppler architecture award in 2016. The complex combines three theatre spaces with foyers, a larger events hall, meeting rooms and a restaurant, giving the former naval yard a new role in the city's cultural life. Den Helder sits at the northern tip of North Holland, where Napoleon ordered the coast fortified and the Dutch navy has been based ever since. De Kampanje, the town's theatre, occupies converted premises in the old naval yard at Willemsoord — brick halls built for constructing and repairing ships, now fitted with an auditorium and a smaller studio. Companies travel to the end of the railway line to play here, opera and drama among them.
