De Goudse Schouwburg

Theatre in Gouda goes back to the Sociëteit Ons Genoegen of 1854 and to the Nieuwe Schouwburg opened beside its hall in 1913; that building was pulled down in 1992, the year the present theatre opened on the same ground on the Boelekade. The design by AGS Architecten gives a main auditorium of 813 seats under two curved balconies, a small hall of 232 and a fly tower twenty-four metres high. Music, opera, musical, dance, drama and cabaret share the programme; the Dutch producers' association named it theatre of the year in 2011.
