Rotterdam's Luxor Theater began in 1917 as a cinema on the Kruiskade. The building survived the bombing of the city centre in 1940 and, after the war, accommodated live theatre alongside film screenings. Productions such as Porgy and Bess in 1956 and the Dutch My Fair Lady in 1960 helped establish its musical-theatre programme. A major reconstruction begun in 1972 transformed the auditorium. The institution subsequently expanded to the Kop van Zuid with the Nieuwe Luxor, designed by Peter Wilson, while retaining the original theatre. A further renovation of the Oude Luxor, completed in 2014, enlarged its public spaces and reworked its façade.
