Willem Dudok designed the building in 1937; the war delayed it, and it opened on 3 September 1941 as the largest theatre in Utrecht, on the Lucasbolwerk at the edge of the old centre. The Grote Zaal normally holds a thousand, though eight rows of seats can be lifted to the balcony to bring it down to six hundred; the flat-floor Blauwe Zaal takes fewer than two hundred. Renovations followed in 1995, 2002 and between 2012 and 2016, and the house was recognised as a national monument around 2009. Touring opera reaches the city through it.
