The theatre in Tiel stands on the site of the medieval St Agnes convent, whose chapel was already being used as a playhouse in the nineteenth century; the present building went up in 1969 to a design by Holt en Bijvoet. The main hall holds about 800 people and the second about 230. Some 180 performances a season cover drama, cabaret, musical, dance, classical music and opera, and the smaller room doubles as an arthouse cinema. With the Zinder centre it forms Cultuurbedrijf Tiel.
