Tiel is the fruit bowl of the Netherlands with a raspberry for a mayor. The Betuwe — the river-island orchard country between Waal and Rhine — blossoms around the town each spring in white and pink, and Tiel has processed, preserved and celebrated the harvest for a century and a half: the old jam works' mascot, Flipje, a cheerful berry-boy of 1930s advertising, became the town's official darling, with his own museum and statue. The devotion culminates each September in the Fruitcorso, the fruit parade, whose floats — vast sculptures mosaicked entirely in apples, pears and seeds — rank among the country's great processional artworks. The town itself is older than its orchards' fame: a trading place of the early Middle Ages on the Waal, once minting coins and paying Viking-era tolls, later a modest Hanse partner, its walls and gasthuis chapel recalling the river centuries; the war's end battered Tiel badly, and the rebuilt centre keeps the survivors close. Musical life follows the register the concert record describes — choirs, church music, school ensembles, festival visits — with Appelpop, the free pop festival on the river meadows, adding one of the country's largest such weekends. Blossom in April, mosaics in September: Tiel harvests beauty on schedule.
