Karlsruhe

Karlsruhe was born from one man's dream, literally: Margrave Karl Wilhelm, napping in his hunting forest in 1715, dreamed — so the story goes — of a palace with streets radiating like sunbeams, and built exactly that. The "fan city" spreads thirty-two avenues from the palace tower, absolutist geometry so lucid that Thomas Jefferson took notes on it while planning Washington. Weinbrenner's cool classicism gave the plan its architecture, and the palace gardens still form the city's green heart.

Modern Germany calls Karlsruhe the "residence of law": the Federal Constitutional Court and the Federal Court of Justice both sit here, making this the guardian city of the Basic Law. Its second vocation is invention — the technical university (now KIT), founded 1825, is the country's oldest, with Carl Benz among its students and Heinrich Hertz proving electromagnetic waves in its lecture hall — a lineage the ZKM, the world-leading Center for Art and Media, extends into the digital age with its vast media-art collections in a converted munitions factory.

Music history holds one golden date: on 4 November 1876, Karlsruhe's court orchestra gave the world premiere of Brahms's First Symphony, the composer preferring a trusted provincial podium to Vienna's scrutiny. The Badisches Staatstheater, with full opera and ballet, and the Händel Festival tradition keep the fan city's cultural sunbeams radiating.
