Merzig

Merzig keeps wolves, presses apples and sings opera in a tent palace. The Saar-side district town is home to the Wolfspark Werner Freund, where the celebrated wolf researcher raised packs by living among them for decades — his successors continue the work, and the enclosures in the Kammerforst let visitors meet the packs at feeding tours, a rare institution that made the town a byword among wildlife filmmakers.

The local drink is Viez, the tart apple cider of the Saar — Merzig proclaims itself a capital of the Viezstraße, pressing festivals and orchard meadows keeping the culture juicy — while the town's stone dignity belongs to St Peter: the largest Romanesque church in the Saarland, its twelfth-century gravity anchoring the market quarter beside the rococo town hall of the Trier electors' era. The "Garden of the Senses" adds contemporary horticulture in themed rooms above the valley.

Culture pitched its flagship unusually: the Zeltpalast, the permanent tent palace on the Saar meadows, stages opera and musical productions each summer season — arias under canvas that have become a Saarland fixture. And the region's icon waits minutes upstream: the Saarschleife, the river's grand horseshoe, viewed from the treetop-walk platform at Cloef. Wolves in the forest, cider in the glass, Verdi in the tent: Merzig arranges its pleasures with cheerful independence.
