Oderzo performs opera on its Roman forum. The Veneto town is ancient Opitergium — a municipium whose street grid, mosaics and basilica foundations surface throughout the centre, gathered in the archaeological museum at Palazzo Foscolo — and its main square, the Piazza del Foro Romano, sits directly upon the ancient forum: when the summer opera season raises its stage there, arias literally rise from Roman pavement, the town's cherished open-air tradition making the piazza a natural home for concerts, productions and the meeting of musical generations under the campanile and the Torresin's clock.
The town wears Venetian centuries gracefully around the Roman core: frescoed façades and porticoes, the Duomo's Gothic calm, canals of the Monticano threading gardens — a miniature of the Serenissima's mainland manner, prosperous then on grain and now on the wine plains all around, for Oderzo presides over Piave DOC country, its cellars and spritz hour observing the local liturgy.
Painting has a native chapter: Alberto Martini, the visionary illustrator of Poe and precursor of Surrealism, was born here — his museum in town keeps the dark fantasies elegantly — while the surrounding opitergino offers cycling plains toward the Livenza and the Prosecco hills' UNESCO amphitheatre within an easy drive. Mosaics below, melodrama above, merlot alongside: Oderzo layers its pleasures on solid foundations.
