Roman Opitergium lies beneath the streets of Oderzo, and part of its forum has been excavated and left open in the centre of the town. The square that takes its name from it hosts the Opera in Piazza summer series, which brings staged opera and orchestral evenings outdoors; Strauss waltzes and operatic programmes have both featured. Performing on ground that served as a market place two thousand years ago is not a metaphor the organisers have needed to labour.
