Rheinbach cuts glass where the Eifel meets the plain. After 1945 the town received expelled glass engravers and cutters from the Sudeten crystal towns, and made their art its own: workshops, a state glass technical school and the Glasmuseum — rich in Bohemian and contemporary studio glass — established Rheinbach as the Rhineland's town of glass, its biennial glass days and gallery windows keeping cold fire in the civic identity, refugees' skill transmuted into heritage.
The older town shows a walled market centre of the Cologne electors' country: the Wasemer Turm and remnants of gates and walls ring lanes rebuilt after heavy war damage, with the Himmeroder Hof's courtyard housing museum and cultural life, and the surrounding villages contributing castles and Romanesque towers across the countryside. The 2021 Swist flood struck hard here as across the region; repair and resilience have entered the town's working vocabulary.
Position gives the daily texture: Bonn's ministries and universities twenty minutes one way — a science and business campus extends the university city into Rheinbach itself — and the Eifel's freedom the other, where the town forest climbs toward the Tomburg's ruin on its basalt knoll, the local lookout and beloved short pilgrimage. Crystal in the showcases, basalt on the horizon, the capital-that-was next door: Rheinbach polishes its situation well.
