Skopje's biography pivots on a single morning: the earthquake of 26 July 1963, which destroyed most of the city and summoned the world — Kenzo Tange drew the master plan, and Skopje rebuilt itself as an open-air museum of concrete modernism, its brutalist post office and university buildings now cult objects of architectural pilgrimage. The old railway station's clock, frozen at 5:17, keeps the moment. What survived the quake is the city's Ottoman heart: the Stone Bridge over the Vardar, and beyond it the Old Bazaar, the largest in the Balkans outside Istanbul, where mosques, hans and coppersmiths' lanes still trade. Mother Teresa was born here in 1910; her memorial house stands near the square. The statue-crowded makeover of the 2010s added a layer of marble and bronze that residents debate with relish — Skopje has never had only one style, or one opinion.
Music holds the riverbank: the Macedonian Philharmonic — formally the National Philharmonic of North Macedonia — received a fine new concert hall in 2016, and the national Opera and Ballet performs beside it in its angular 1970s house (the concert record lists both institutions under their older and newer names, plus an open-air stage; two institutions in fact, flagged for the workbook). Byzantine frescoes at nearby Nerezi, Matka canyon minutes away: Skopje compresses a great deal of Balkans into a small, unduplicable capital.
