Stadtlohn saw the Thirty Years' War decide a chapter at its gates. In August 1623, Tilly's army caught Christian of Brunswick's retreating force at the Lohner heath and destroyed it — the Battle of Stadtlohn, one of the war's crushing engagements, ended the Protestant commander's campaigns and fixed the little Berkel town in every account of the century's catastrophe; memorial stones and the town museum keep the field's memory, war's grand narrative attached to a peaceable market town.
The Berkel gives the gentler identity: the little river that winds from here into the Netherlands has become a shared showcase — mills, meadows and canoe waters, with the "Berkelkompanie" boat trips and cycle route binding German and Dutch towns in one valley project, the border a formality of signage. Stadtlohn itself rebuilt after 1945's destruction around St Otger's towering church, whose treasury keeps the old parish's pride; pottery and woodworking wrote the craft centuries, mid-size industry and commerce the present ones.
The Münsterland's flat green order supplies the pleasures: hedged fields and moated houses within pedalling reach, the airfield's gliders overhead, kirmes and Schützenfest marking the calendar with Westphalian regularity. A battle in the histories, a river to the neighbours, a market square in daily use: Stadtlohn wears heavy history lightly and cycles on.
