Tecklenburg stages musicals in a castle ruin on Westphalia's balcony. The little hill town — the region's only true height settlement, half-timbered lanes climbing the Teutoburg ridge — turned its castle's remains into the Freilichtspiele: an open-air stage counted among Germany's largest for musical theatre, where each summer full-scale productions with orchestras and flying rigs play to thousands under the stars, the medieval walls as permanent set. The counts of Tecklenburg once surveyed half the region from this rock — their gate arch, the Wierturm lookout and lapidary fragments survive among the stage machinery — and the town below them is a preserved composition: the market with its Rathaus and leaning gables, the legendary "Hexenküche" corner, lace-curtained timber facades that earn the "romantic town" branding honestly. The ridge supplies the setting's drama: the Hermannsweg high trail runs straight through town on its Teutoburg journey, the Dörenther Klippen's sandstone crags — including the "Hockendes Weib" formation — wait one stage west, and the Münsterland spreads its quilt below the viewpoints. Kurpark, apothecary museum and wedding-favourite churches complete the miniature. A ruin that sings show tunes, a ridge that walks well: Tecklenburg is Westphalia's stage box, always booked.
