In the ruins of the castle above Tecklenburg, an open-air theatre opened on 20 July 1924 with Schiller's Wilhelm Tell. Earth-moving in 1934 gave it the amphitheatre shape it still has, and with more than 1,800 seats it counts among the largest open-air music theatres in Germany. Plays gave way by degrees to opera, operetta and, from the 1990s, musicals; in 2006 the company mounted the first open-air staging of Les Misérables anywhere. Tecklenburg has styled itself a festival town since 2014.
