Colombia's Teatro de Cristóbal Colón in Bogotá was designed by Pietro Cantini and formally inaugurated on 12 October 1892. Its horseshoe-shaped auditorium reflects Italian theatre architecture. A restoration programme beginning in 2008 renewed both the historic fabric and stage facilities, and the theatre reopened to the public in July 2014.
The Bogotá Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1967 and is attached to the city's Secretariat of Culture, Recreation and Sport. Its performances have used venues including the León de Greiff Auditorium, Teatro Jorge Eliécer Gaitán and Teatro Mayor Julio Mario Santo Domingo. Alongside international symphonic repertoire, its activity includes Colombian music and programmes intended to widen public access to orchestral performance.
