The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb dates its institutional activity to 24 November 1860 and its legal establishment to 1861. Its permanent opera ensemble was formed in 1870 under Ivan Zajc. The present theatre building, designed by Fellner and Helmer, opened on 14 October 1895; this date is distinct from the institution's beginnings. The theatre maintains drama, opera and ballet ensembles and has staged works by Croatian composers including Vatroslav Lisinski, Zajc and Jakov Gotovac.
The Dubrovnik Summer Festival began in 1950. Its programme brings theatre, dance, opera and classical music into the city's historic settings, with the Dubrovnik Symphony Orchestra among its participating ensembles.
