Opening night at George Mason University's Center for the Arts fell on 6 October 1990, with Marvin Hamlisch as host and Jean-Pierre Rampal, Roberta Peters and Robert Klein on the bill — a deliberately mixed evening that set the pattern for the room. The Concert Hall has since presented orchestras, dance and chamber music alongside popular and spoken-word work, and gave the world premiere of Mark Morris's 'Serenade'. Well over a hundred Grammy winners have appeared in it. Verdi's 'Macbeth' is among the operas staged there. The hall serves the university's own musicians as steadily as it serves the artists who visit.
