Charleston Municipal Auditorium was dedicated on 4 November 1939, following a local campaign for a larger performing-arts venue and support from the Public Works Administration. Designed by Charleston architect Alphonso Wysong, its concrete-and-steel structure is a distinctive example of Art Deco civic architecture. Violinist Zino Francescatti appeared at the first concert on 7 November 1939. Over subsequent decades the auditorium accommodated concerts, theatre and visiting productions, and it entered the National Register of Historic Places in 1999. The building was closed in February 2024 because of life-safety concerns.
