Rabbi Sidney Wolf chartered a symphony society for this Gulf Coast city in 1945, and on 10 December of that year eight hundred people came to Corpus Christi High School to hear its first concert under C. Burdette Wolfe. The orchestra moved to the Bayfront Plaza Auditorium in 1978 and now plays in the Performing Arts Center on the bayfront campus of Texas A&M University–Corpus Christi, where its music director is Hector Guzman. Six classical subscription programmes make up the core of each season, with free education concerts across the Coastal Bend and support for the area's youth orchestra — the pattern of an ensemble that has spent eight decades as the only professional orchestra for a long stretch of Texas coastline.
