The Hanoi Philharmonic Orchestra was established in 1997 and draws its musicians from the teaching staff of the Vietnam National Academy of Music. Its concert activity combines the international orchestral repertoire with works by Vietnamese composers and support for young Vietnamese performers. Collaborators have included pianist Dang Thai Son and violinist Stephan Tran Ngoc, alongside guest conductors from Europe, Asia and elsewhere. International appearances have taken the ensemble to Japan, Laos, Thailand and Russia, and it toured France in May 2007. Among the symphonic ensembles working in the Vietnamese capital, the Hanoi Philharmonic gives concerts of standard orchestral repertoire and appears with visiting soloists and conductors. Vietnam's classical music life is concentrated in Hanoi, around the national academy of music and the city's concert halls, and orchestras of this kind supply much of what the season contains.
