The Macomb Center for the Performing Arts opened at Macomb Community College on 7 November 1982. Its predecessor was the Barn Theatre, a converted farm building used for performances from 1969 until its closure in 1977. Designed by TMP Associates, the new centre provided a 1,271-seat auditorium and a smaller Stage II space accommodating about 200 people. An acoustic sculpture by Glen Michaels forms part of the main auditorium. Clinton Township lies in Macomb County, on the northern edge of the Detroit conurbation, and its performing arts centre is the presenting house for a suburban population large enough to fill a theatre but far enough from the city to want its own. Touring productions of opera, dance and orchestral music make up the season; Verdi's Aida has been among them.
