The Sanremo Symphony Orchestra traces its history to 1905 and received recognition as an Istituzione Concertistica Orchestrale in 1967. It became a foundation in 2003. Conductors associated with its development include Carlo Farina, who led it from 1953 to 1979, Evelino Pidò and Stefan Anton Reck. Its principal venue is the Teatro dell'Opera del Casinò di Sanremo. Since summer 2021 its summer season has also used the reopened Auditorium Alfano. Performances at the Forte di Santa Tecla, Villa Ormond and the Roman theatre in Ventimiglia extend its programme to other sites. The orchestra also organises concerts and educational activities for schools. Sanremo's orchestra plays in a hall named for Franco Alfano, the composer who completed Puccini's Turandot and who spent his last years in the town. Now constituted as a foundation, it is the standing ensemble for orchestral music in western Liguria, and the Auditorium Franco Alfano its home. Its programmes reach past the symphonic core: Cimarosa's overture to Il matrimonio segreto has appeared alongside "Una serata all'opera senza cantanti" — an operatic evening with the singers deliberately left out, the orchestra taking every line itself.
