Named for a president of the University of Kentucky, the Singletary Center is the university's main building for the performing arts and the busiest classical venue in Lexington. Its concert hall serves the School of Music — orchestras, choirs, wind ensembles, opera — and also houses the city's professional orchestral concerts, so that student and professional life share a single stage. Its principal concert hall accommodates approximately 1,500 listeners. The Singletary Center for the Arts opened at the University of Kentucky in Lexington on 1 November 1979 as the Center for the Arts. It was renamed on 16 April 1987 in honour of Otis A.
