Barbara of Braganza, queen consort of Ferdinand VI and a serious musician who brought Domenico Scarlatti with her from Lisbon, founded the convent of the Salesas Reales in Madrid in the middle of the eighteenth century. Its church, now the parish church of Santa Bárbara, is a work of Bourbon court architecture on a scale the order itself would never have required, and it holds the tombs of the queen and her husband. The acoustic of the nave suits classical-period sacred music and the symphonies of the same decades.
