Maria Theresa ordered a baroque granary raised near the Danube in 1773. Between 1913 and 1919 it was turned inside out into a neo-Baroque building with Rococo and Art Nouveau detailing — one of the first in Bratislava to be built on a ferro-concrete frame. The Reduta has led several lives since: municipal music school, fashionable restaurants, and, in 1916, the city's first cinema. Its concert hall of some seven hundred seats began receiving audiences that same year, under the auspices of the Bratislava Concert Association.
From the early 1950s the Reduta has been the home of the Slovak Philharmonic, whose orchestra, choir and chamber orchestra all work from the building; the Bratislava Music Festival and the Johann Nepomuk Hummel piano competition are administered from the same address. Bach concertos and the classical repertoire have long been staples of the room.
