Pingtan International Performing Arts Center stands northeast of Jinjing Bay in the Pingtan Comprehensive Experimental Area of Fujian Province. The complex occupies approximately 39,000 square metres and includes a theatre seating 1,500. Its programme has presented Pingtan Impression, directed by dancer and choreographer Yang Liping. The theatre was equipped with a sound system designed to accommodate different performance formats, allowing settings to be adapted between productions. Its main auditorium provides a substantial indoor stage for theatrical and musical performances in Pingtan. Off the Fujian coast, Pingtan Island has been developed at speed as an experimental zone for trade and tourism, and a large performing arts centre was built as part of that programme. It receives domestic companies and civic events, and it takes its share of the New Year tours that carry European orchestras through Chinese cities each winter — a season of concerts that has become a fixture of the country's musical calendar.
