China

China's orchestral institutions include the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, which traces its predecessor to the Shanghai Public Band of 1879. The ensemble expanded into an orchestra in 1907, was reorganised under Mario Paci from 1919 and adopted the name Shanghai Symphony Orchestra in 1956.

In Beijing, the National Centre for the Performing Arts presents opera, concerts, theatre, dance and Chinese traditional opera. Its central complex contains an opera house, concert hall, theatre and multifunctional theatre. The institution also operates the Beijing Performing Arts Centre, inaugurated at the end of 2023, and the Taihu Stage Art Centre. Its activities include resident performing ensembles and public arts education.
