Shanghai Grand Theatre opened on 27 August 1998 on People's Square. Designed by Jean-Marie Charpentier, the complex contains three theatres and presents opera, ballet, orchestral concerts, musicals and Chinese traditional theatre. Its programme has brought companies and ensembles from abroad to Shanghai, including the Royal Opera House, La Scala and major European orchestras. In 2002 it hosted Les Misérables, an early landmark in its presentation of international musical theatre. Rehearsal and supporting facilities allow the building to accommodate productions of different scales. The theatre's identity rests on this range of visiting and locally presented performances within a single city-centre arts complex.
