Opened on 12 October 1928 as a Schine house for vaudeville and film, with 1,800 seats and a Page pipe organ, the State passed to Warner Brothers in 1930 and to the Seltz company three years later. It was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982, and a non-profit foundation formed in 1988 to save it. The severest test came in June 2020, when a storm brought down the roof and part of the building. Restoration ran to some thirty-five million dollars; the theatre reopened in late 2023, and an endowment was established to keep it open. Opera has featured in its programming over the years, Carmen among the titles.
